The fortress of Akhtala is situated on the bank of Debed river. It was built in the 10th century by the Kyurikian branch of Bagratuni family and includes the church of the Apostles or St. Gregory and the church of St. Godmother. The latter is known for its outstanding frescoes.
On the left bank of Dzoraget river, not too far from Stepanavan city, lie the ruins of medieval fortress-city Loriberd. In the 10-12cc it was the center of Lori princedom.
